I designed and modeled a complete mecanum-drive robot from scratch in just 7 days for this fast-paced CAD competition
The robot had a 355° swiveling turret with an additional linkage-driven slide system, allowing the robot to reach into the center scoring zone of the CADathon game
I chose an X-contact bearing for the turret to resist both axial and radial loads simultaneously, which helps with stability when the turret spins with the horizontal slides extended.
Steel rails with a 3D-printed hook would lift the robot off the ground during the endgame climb
I designed the scoring end effector around a virtual 4-bar linkage with an added wrist joint and extra degree of freedom, enabling the robot to place game elements quickly and in a variety of orientations
I designed a deliberately unconventional design purely out of curiosity, with no regard for actual feasibility or competition purpose
Rather than assigning individual motors to separate mechanisms, I routed all 8 motors to drive a single shared flywheel mounted at the rear of the robot, allowing the robot to theoretically reach speeds of over 10 ft/s with incredibly high torque.
The robot used a system of clutches to engage or disengage individual mechanisms, using the flywheel to power multiple different mechanisms
I learned a lot about designing linkages and clutch mechanisms through the process of exploring out this concept
I designed this robot around SKYSTONE (2019-2020 FTC game and my favorite) in my sophomore year of high school
Designed my first-ever custom swerve drivebase, giving the robot way more grip than the slipping mecanum wheels most FTC robots rely on
I Based my swerve modules on FTC 16379's offseason swerve drive, which I used as a starting point and inspiration
The robot used a sprung flywheel intake to grab the brick game elements efficiently
Designed an overcentering linkage claw to transfer elements from the intake to the outtake, inspired by FTC 11115's similar mechanism.
The robot would score and stacked elements using a virtual 4-bar linkage paired with a slide, capable of stacking up to around 10 elements high
